STOP the MOPED MENACE
Lawless Mopeds — tens of thousands of them — now overrun New York’s sidewalks, bike lanes, pedestrian plazas, even parks. Every day and night they blow through red lights, drive the wrong way with impunity, roaring their two stroke engines or menacing us silently with electric speed. As fast as motorcycles, without plates or insurance, the drivers of these illegal machines know they cannot be caught. The police know it too. . . they rarely even try to enforce the law.
How Sad !! New York has settled for this mess — a new status quo, a nightmare scenario — when in fact the mayor could enforce existing laws and stop this onslaught in a few weeks. He can do this safely without risk to anyone.
The Campaign Against Lawless Mopeds begins with Adams’ announcing to the press and the people of New York “No More.”
He must then direct his Commissioners (Transportation, Building and consumer & Worker Protection) to do what they have failed to do since he took office – enforce existing laws to shut down the dealers and impound the machines.
- First, DoT must place signage at entrances to bridge bike lanes, parks, plazas, to make clear that mopeds do not belong. Additionally DoT must impound unregistered mopeds parked all over our sidewalks. The law says they can just take them.
- The Buildings Department must shut down dealers who sell or services mopeds in retail spaces. fly E-bike, Fly Wing, Fly Sky all sell mopeds in storefronts, which violates zoning laws that protect residents from toxic gases, fires and noise. In thirty days they’d be forced out.
- DCWP can fine dealers of illegal motor vehicles $1,000.00 per unit, sold or displayed. Make them Pay Pay Pay.
Mayor, these measures alone will stop the influx of such machines into our city. You alone can order your Commissioners to do their jobs.
Mayor take charge, lay down the law.
Make New York’s streets, sidewalks and bike lanes SAFE again!
YOU CAN by doing YOUR job.
